Fall in Huntsville, Alabama is simply magical. After months of sweltering temperatures and muggy humidity, the fresh, crisp air is welcomed with open arms. With vibrant autumn leaves as a background, it’s the perfect time for family portraits! Coming up with what to wear so everyone looks nice with the fall colors can be overwhelming, especially when you’re planning for the whole family. But don’t stress- I’m here with my most helpful tips to help you and yours look your best while staying warm and cozy!
No More Guesswork
Choosing what to wear for your portrait session shouldn’t be stressful. A little planning goes a long way in deciding on outfits that are comfortable, stylish, and show off your family’s personality. Instead of looking at this as a task to check off your to-do list, try to enjoy the process! So let’s dig into the layers, colors, and patterns and find pieces you’ll love.
Cozy Layers
Fall is all about light layers, plus it’s an easy way to add depth to your outfit. A cardigan, jacket, sweater, or vest will help keep you warm and add visual interest. Add soft knits and quilted vests for the littles. These are both cozy and cute! Pro tip: Add layers, but don’t overdo them. We’ll warm up during the session and we definitely don’t want you to overheat.
Choosing Your Color Palette
This one tip will make choosing outfits so much easier! Having a theme to plan around simplifies the whole process. The colors you choose will set the tone of your images so be intentional. If you like the light and airy look, neutral and soft colors will help you reach that look. Do you prefer bold and colorful? Rich, jeweled tones work here. I like to search for “fall family photo outfits” on Pinterest and pin a few that catch my eye. Are there any similarities between the colors? Or does a specific palette resonate with you? Use this as your jumping off point.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
When planning family outfits, it’s important to coordinate without matching one another. If pieces match too closely, it can be difficult to see where one person ends and the other begins in the finished images. Instead, choose varying shades of the same color. This way, the colors will complement each other without being too similar. And I recommend keeping the main pieces neutral with pops of color- whether it’s soft color or bold- the choice is yours!
Adding Patterns & Textures
With patterns- remember that less is more. I like to add in one piece with a pattern for visual interest. If subtle, patters can bring the whole look to life, but too much pattern can start to detract from the point of interest- your beautiful family’s faces! While we want to keep patterns to a minimum, feel free to play with textures. This is a great way to add depth and interest without being too distracting. For fall, wool, knits, and tweeds all work well.
Pro tip for littles: When choosing pieces for the kiddos, remember that their comfort and mobility are the most important. Make sure your kids’ outfits check these boxes for happy, cooperative little people!
